Standing Outside the Fire

Today we had the opportunity to view and discuss Garth Brook's song and video clip "Standing Outside the Fire" (1994). The young man featured in the video has Down Syndrome. He teaches us many important lessons.

What did you learn from the lyrics of the song and the video's messages ? Feel free to make any additional comments. (Please respond to the following in the the comments section.)

  1. I thought the young man acted really well in the video. He taught me that you should work hard to realize your dreams. It also does not matter if you come in first in a race, what is important is that you train hard, never give up and always do your best. That's what a real "WINNER" is. I also learned that sometimes your parents seem like they don't want you to take part in an activity because they're afraid you will get hurt, not because they don't love you. FG

  3. I thought the message from the video was that even if we have some differences it does not mean we can't have dreams. We are also the same in many ways.

  5. This clip taught me to never give up even if you think you can't do it. It also taught me that if your parents don't want you to do something it's not because they don't love you it's because they don't want you to get hurt! The video also showed us that just because someone is different it doesn't mean they can't do the same things as us!

  6. The message in this video is never give up. I think the boy in the movie clip meant to to show us to go for your dreams and not someone elses dream. Don't let people tell you what to do. -Isaac

  10. I thought that the kid in the video was very brave to get back up and to finish the race even though he got hurt. The lesson I learned is to never give up no matter what happens.

  11. I think the message from the video clip is that we are the same in many different ways, and that even if you are different, you should never give up no matter what. Just like the boy in the video clip that we saw today. The boy showed that no matter who you are you should never give up!

  12. I thought that the boy taught his dad a good lesson. You need to take part in an activity to have fun but you can get hurt. Still, you need to take a chance.

  13. I think the message is that even if you are different on the outside you are very much alike on the inside. You can have the same dreams and make them come true. You don't need to listen to people that say you can't do something. Even though the boy fell he still finished the race.

  14. I think this taught me a lot, like to never be afraid. You should always stand in the action. If you don't stand in the action you're nothing. Standing in the action, or in the fire, you could get hurt but it's having fun and living life.

  15. I think I learned a lot of things. Like when the dad screamed at the boy's mom. He didn't want his son to play, it was not because he did not want him to be in the race, it was because he was scared his son would get hurt or something like that. He did that because he loves his son so much!!! I think Garth Brook's video is the best video that I've seen yet!!! The main actor was really good and he did a super part in the clip. The dad, mom and coach did really well too!!! I think all the actors and singers were great!!! Some more lessons I learned are to not let others break your dreams!!! I now also know that to "stand in the fire" means that you should always try to be in the action of life. Don't just stand there and do nothing!!! ALWAYS CONTINUE YOUR DREAM AND NEVER LET GO!!! 17. I learned that if you have a dream you should not let your life destroy it. The video's message was also that if your parents tell you not to do something it does not mean they don't love you. They just want to protect you.

  18. I thought the message was that you should never give up even if you are behind by a lot. Keep going at least you can always finish the race.

  19. I learned that if you fight fire with fire all you get is a bigger fire. Just like the coach and the dad were saying that the young man would get hurt, they were wrong and the son showed them that by getting up and still going on to finish the race he could do it!

  20. The video clip showed me that if in life you fall down don't give up. Also, it is not always all about winning it is about if you try. I also learned even if you are different you can still be like everyone else in many ways.

  21. I learned from the video that if you have a dream you should not deny it. You should take a risk to try something new. When my class watched this video I thought that in your life there will be bad things and good things to try. When you try it you could succeed, if you don't nothing will happen

  24. I have learned that people can make a big difference. If someone that tells you that you cannot do anything don't let it bother you. If you won't take the chance you can't get anything. It is not about winning it is about making a difference.

  25. I learned that it is easy to give up when you're in a race it's hard to come back when you fall. But it is important to try again.

  26. I learned that even if you have problems, like the boy who had Downs Syndrome it does not mean that you can't do what other people do because they can!

  36. Annemarie showed courage by risking her life for her best friend Ellen. If she was caught helping a Jew by the Nazis she would be but in jail. She decided to help anyway at her own life's risk.
